The Zone Diet
The Zone Diet consists of watching what you eat to maintain insulin and eicosanoids. Barry Sears, a former researcher
in biotechnology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, believes that controlling the levels of insulin will
lead to a health happy life.
The zone is a psychological state of mind where hormones which are governed by food are situated within zones that are
a happy medium, not too high and not to low. Now we all now the benefits of controlling your sugar level (insulin) are
decreases in the chances of contracting cardiovascular diseases and also lowering the risk of diabetes. Blood tests are
used to define the zone your hormones need to be in but Dr Sears states that they are the same tests done to determine
“wellness” and are therefore evidence based figures for 21st century health care.
The Zone diet is purely based on controlling your levels of insulin and a supplement of high-dose fish oil. To control
your insulin you basically need to watch how much fat, protein and carbohydrates that you are consuming at each meal.
Best results come form a moderate fat, moderate protein and moderate carbohydrate balance. Most fat should consist of
the healthy fat, monounsaturated fats.
Now the second part of the diet is a supplement of high dose fish oil. This is now only possible because of medical
experts making fish oil available to consume with gastric “disturbances”.
In general the Zone diets eating plan consists of a combination of small amount of low fat proteins, fats and carbohydrates
in every meal. Proteins should be eating with every meal and snack and when carbohydrates are eaten they should be twice
the size of the proteins! The goal of the Zone diet is to keep a hormonal balance between fat storing insulin and the
hormone glucagon sand. This hormone controls the release of sugar from the liver when it is needed. It can be said
that you have to keep your insulin in a tight zone-not to high and not to low.
Overall there isn’t enough medical evidence to support Dr Sears theories although many have claimed that the diet has
worked well for them. This is a kind of diet where you must try before you know the outcome. The Zone Diet is a life
long hormonal control diet.
